In a poignant display of cultural exchange and solidarity, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland, Gerasko Larysa, made a significant visit to Kerry, Ireland. The Ambassador met with learners and staff from across Kerry Education and Training Board (Kerry ETB). The visit displayed the warmth and hospitality of the Kerry community, as well as the positive impact of education and training.
One of the highlights of the event was the stirring performance by the Ukrainian folk choir from Killarney, which notably included students from Kerry College. Their harmonious melodies resonated through the venue, embodying the rich cultural creativity that both Ukraine and Ireland offer. Additionally, a vibrant dance performance further accentuated the shared appreciation for artistic expression between the two nations.
Opening the speeches at the event Principal Stephen Goulding emphasised the transformative impact of education, stating, “At Kerry College, we believe in empowering individuals through education, enabling them to reach their full potential.” Kerry ETB’s Further Education and Training locations, including Kerry College have provided comprehensive support to over 3000 Ukrainian learners, with a particular focus on English language proficiency. Utilising Kerry ETB’s extensive network of centres and campuses across the county, these learners have been afforded a multitude of opportunities to enhance their skills and seamlessly transition into the workforce.
Central to the gathering were the Ukrainian students from Coláiste Gleann Lí and Kerry College, who bravely shared their personal stories of integration and the positive experiences they have encountered since arriving in Kerry. Their testimonies shed light on the importance of community support and the welcoming atmosphere fostered by institutions like Kerry ETB.
Jim Finucane, Cathaoirleach at Kerry ETB, expressed the significance of welcoming individuals into the community, stating, “It is imperative that we extend a warm welcome to those who come seeking refuge and opportunity. when we accept and include people from diverse backgrounds, it makes our community stronger and more resilient. “He stressed how important it is to create a place where everyone feels like they belong.
Kerry ETB has been instrumental in providing essential support and services families looking for school places for their children. The Regional Education and Language Team within the ETB has placed Ukrainian students who have arrived in Kerry into primary and secondary schools across the county. The team has played a pivotal role in facilitating the integration of these students into the local educational system.
Ambassador Gerasko Larysa conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to the people of Kerry, especially the management and staff of Kerry ETB, for their unwavering support and hospitality towards Ukrainian nationals. “The warmth and generosity of the Kerry community has provided our people with not just safety, but a sense of belonging,” she remarked. “We are deeply grateful for the opportunities afforded to us and the kindness shown in our time of need.”
