An Tóchar Further Education and Training Centre is located in the rustic village of Causeway in north Kerry and was officially opened in March 2003. Since then the centre has been a hub of activity in the community, providing a wide range of hobby and accredited courses.
The centre sits on over two acres of grounds, much of which is now utilised for varying horticulture courses, there are two polytunnels, a potting shed and an extensive orchard.
There is a fully equipped kitchen where QQI courses from level 3 to level 5 are run, students study cookery for a variety of reasons, some are self – employed in the tourism industry and want to upskill from their current knowledge level, others to progress to higher level professional courses and many learners just want to gain skills so that they can provide healthy meals for their families.
Health Care Support is central in our suite of courses, every year we have a vibrant and dedicated group of students that are passionate about working in the caring field. We have built up excellent relationships with nursing homes across the county as well as hospitals, where our students hone their skills and knowledge during their work placement.
Other courses that we offer and that are always in high demand are Early Childhood Care & Education. Art courses that encompass painting, drawing, ceramics and woodwork. Dog grooming at QQI level 5, from which several of our former learners have set up their own businesses.
We also offer an extensive array of courses under Community Education from yoga, line dancing, zumba to art, wood carving, cookery, mental health awareness and counselling skills, beekeeping, local history and genealogy.
All of our courses are part time and offered at times that will suit people that are already managing a busy family life.
These courses are run under the Back to Education Initiative or Community Education.
