Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, TD offically opens KCFE Denny Street Campus

Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) Denny Street Campus Officially Opened!

Kerry Education and Training Board’s (Kerry ETB) Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) Denny Street Campus was officially opened on Thursday May 2nd by the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh TD, with hundreds of guests, staff and students in attendance   The official opening is very significant as it firmly embeds Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) in to Tralee Town Centre.   From the College’s perspective, the introduction of a second campus was necessary as student numbers were substantially increasing.  This new location means Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) is in a position to offer as many students as possible the opportunity to remain in Kerry to study a programme of their choice.

The Campus encompasses 5, 6, 7 and 8 Denny Street and the refurbishment of the existing buildings and introduction of a large student body has helped to re-energise and rejuvenate the town centre.  The Campus has 11 lecture rooms; including two high spec computer rooms; 4 dedicated medical stations; offices; a canteen and more.   Tremendous effort went in to maintaining the authenticity of the buildings, built in Georgian times, and the wonderful workmanship remains evident throughout.

The new building is currently dedicated to the Health and Social Sciences Departments and will facilitate the delivery of the Nursing Studies, Nursing with Maternity Care Skills, Carers, Youth Work, Applied Social Studies with Psychology, Emergency Care Services, Medicine Counter Pharmacy Assistant, Surgical Operative Care Assistant, Advanced Social Care with Counselling Studies and Health Services Supervisory Management programmes.   The focus on the Health and Social Sciences programmes is particularly relevant as the additional new premises have purpose built dedicated medical stations.  Through continued developments and engagement with the Health and Social Care Providers in the county, Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) continues to establish itself as a major provider of highly skilled work ready graduates for both the workplace and for progression to third level education.

The town centre was an obvious choice as it not only enhances the atmosphere positively but also the local businesses benefit.  Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) has received huge support from all of the Tralee business community and they have helped in every way possible according to Principal Mary Lucey.  The ideal positioning of the Denny Street Campus facilitates Kerry College Clash Campus (KCFE) collaborating easily with other businesses and organisations in the provision of work placements, guest lectures and workshops etc.  It also places the College in an ideal position to offer up-skilling and courses for employers and employees.

The CEO of Kerry ETB Mr. Colm McEvoy said “Kerry ETB are delighted to host the visit of the Minister of Education and Skills to Kerry ETB at a time when a number of key projects have reached a significant milestone with the opening of the Kerry College Clash Campus, Denny Street Campus, the Turning of the sod for the site enabling works for the Gaelcholaiste Chiarraí Campas Nua and the opening of the extension at Coláiste Gleann Lí.

I wish to thank the Minister and his officials at the Department of Education and Skills for their continued support for Kerry ETB.  These projects are representative of the ongoing commitement of Kerry ETB to enhance the working and learning environment for our staff, students/lerarners. Kerry ETB has an extensive range of provision across the county including primary, post primary and further education.  In addition, I wish to thank SOLAS for their ongoing support for our Further Education and Training programmes.”

The Director of Further Education and Training for Kerry ETB, Mr. Owen O’Donnell stated “Kerry ETB is delighted with the opening of this new Campus in the centre of Tralee town.  This will allow us to accommodate the growing numbers of students in the Health and Life Sciences with adding a new vibrancy to the town centre.”
